  The Department of Psychology at Nottingham Trent University

The Psychology Department at Nottingham Trent University is seeking additional lecturers in psychology to further strengthen our research and to meet the demands of new course provision and increased student numbers in our undergraduate, MSc and doctoral programmes. We particularly welcome applications that can contribute to our ambition to enhance the diversity and critical awareness of our curricula.

As Lecturer in Psychology (Sleep) you will be joining the team led by Professor Joh. Groeger. Groeger’s appointment in 2017 has engendered considerable interest in sleep research and its applications across the University- leading to the recent establishment of sleep research, sleep deprivation and wet laboratory facilities within Psychology, as well as a growing sleep assessment service. We now wish to strengthen our research competence, teaching and sleep training by appointing a lecturer with research experience in (a) sleep related EEG/polysomnography, or (b) saliva/plasma monitoring of sleep/circadian related hormones, neurotransmitters/ cytokines, or (c) at scale self-report and/or actigraphy studies of sleep and its implications health, well-being and cognitive function. Those with a commitment to training and developing their skills in one or more of these, in addition to their current sleep research competence, are especially welcome.  

  The Department

You will be joining a very large, lively, diverse, collegiate and ambitious group with an excellent reputation for its theoretically informed impactful and applied research and its teaching provision at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will be part of a management team of 12 Principal Lecturers and two Heads of Department who all have a designated portfolio of responsibilities.

The Department has the largest and most productive research unit in the University and is responsible for a quarter of all academic outputs at NTU in the current REF cycle. In the submission to REF2014 (Unit of Assessment A04, http://www.ref.ac.uk/) 60% of our research outputs were identified as internationally excellent or world leading and 100% of our research impact was recognised as internationally excellent with 73% described as world leading.

We are the largest provider of full-time undergraduate degrees in psychology in the UK. Our NSS scores for overall satisfaction have been above 90% for the last eight years and our eight-year average is not bettered by any university in the UK. We lead in the University on issues of diversity and inclusion and are the only department at NTU to have achieved for Athena SWAN recognition. We also lead on initiatives to decolonise the curriculum.

Our commitment to teaching is shown by the collaboration of over 90 staff to create an introductory text for SAGE (3rd edition published Spring 2019) which is given to all our first-year undergraduates, and the royalties of which are used to enhance the student experience.


Applicants will have a PhD or professional doctorate in Psychology (or equivalent). You should be an enthusiastic teacher with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a commitment to supporting students' development at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Mentoring and support for development in both teaching and research will be provided to appointees appropriate to their level of experience.
