The School of Social Sciences offers colleagues a vibrant research environment and culture which supports Early Career Researchers through to distinguished academics to realise their research aspirations.

 

Research Centres in the School are cross disciplinary and reflect our research excellence in:

 

  • Children Young People and Families
  • Behavioural Methods
  • Public and Psychosocial Health
  • Crime and Offending, Prevention and Engagement

 

Each research Centre is home to a number of research groups which reflect eleven strategic research themes for example:  Crime Reduction, Education Policy and Practice, Promoting Social and Democratic Inclusion and Transformation; and Mental Health and Wellbeing. Much of our research is applied and we have a strong pipeline of impact case studies across all research Centres that reflects this. The Nottingham Civic Exchange in the School supports our policy focused research to influence police makers; for example in the areas of ordinary working families, emergency services, social prescribing and work and wellbeing.  

 

Each Department in the School hosts a research seminar series which is open to academic staff and research students. Annually we host a School-wide research sandpit event in the autumn and a 2-day School Research Conference in the Spring.  Research events also take place at departmental level for example conferences and networking meetings. In 2019 we successfully hosted the Political Studies Association international conference here at NTU.  

 

There are funding opportunities available at School level to support a range of research activities such as small scale research projects, help with data collection and international conference attendance. Help with identifying research funders nationally and internationally and support with larger scale grant applications is available from the Research Support Office.

 

The School of Social Sciences prides itself on our ability to recruit and support PGR students through to completion. We currently have over 170 post graduate  research students enrolled with us and the latest PRES survey figures in 2017 showed a satisfaction rate of 90%.

 

Research colleagues are frequently in the media and many contribute to The Conversation. We have won prestigious awards that reflect our research excellence for example the Robin Corbett Award for Prisoner Rehabilitation and the Guardian University Award for Social and Community Impact in recognition of our research in the area of offender rehabilitation.
